Here is a simple template that you may follow for your earthquake comparison, if you choose to write an essay.

I. Introduction
A. Which earthquakes did you choose? Include magnitude and date.
B. State your hypothesis.
Example: The Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 would have rivaled the Great San Francisco earthquake of 1906 if the section of the fault that ruptured were five times larger.

II. Body
A. One paragraph describing earthquake A. Use the research from USGS.gov.
B. One paragraph describing earthquake B.
C. One paragraph that describes the similarities between the quakes.
D. One paragraph that describes the differences between the quakes. A skilled writer could combine C & D into one para.
E. One paragraph that explains how your hypothesis can be supported by the research.

Example: A close examination of the data suggests that these earthquakes were very similar in magnitude, intensity, and damage. The biggest difference, though, was the location. If the Japan 2011 earthquake occurred in the same area as the Sumatra 2004 earthquake, then it would have killed just as many people.

III. Conclusion
A. Restate your hypothesis.
B. Challenge the reader to think further about your hypothesis.

IV. References
A. Cite all resources you used to get your information.
